Our Camp History
The camp grounds of Mt. Hope Camp were founded in 1910 by 2 farmers who hired ministers to preach until 1933 when Rev. Woodson Hopkins, a Methodist minister bought part interest and took charge. In 1955, Rev. and Mrs. Hopkins sold the camp to 9 trustees of the Mt. Hope Holiness Association of Fleming County KY. This Association ran the camp for 3 years until it was given as a gift to the Eastern KY District Church of the Nazarene in 1958. Many churches gathered together that day and it is said by Dr. D.S. Somerville that "the Lord's presence was felt among us in such a manner that we felt we were gathered there under God's divine leadership."
What started with a few acres with an open air Tabernacle with sawdust as a floor, a water well, small cabins, and primitive facilities has been changed completely into a 60 acre campus. Over the years, a new dining facility was built along with boys and girls dorms, a new Tabernacle, a motel, a hotel, a snack shack, a playground, a work shop, and many cabins. Many people contributed to Mt. Hope Camp with time, money, and talents.
Not only were buildings built and the camp grounds changed, but lives have been changed at Mt. Hope Camp. It is sacred ground, because God continues to meet with His people there. We are thankful for our past and we are excited about our future! God has great things in store! Come, help us provide HOPE for today and tomorrow! |
